The National Pro Bono Celebration is underway, and Ohio leads the country in number of events and activities marking the event.
Ohios legal aid societies, bar associations and law schools have planned nearly 70 events to mark the Celebration, over two thirds of them client-centered clinics in which pro bono lawyers offer brief legal advice, for free, to individuals who cannot afford a lawyer.
At the Job Center in Tallmadge, near Akron, on October 22nd, 30 pro bono lawyers from the Akron Bar Association provided free legal advice to 105 low income persons who visited a free clinic organized by Community Legal Aid, which serves central northeast Ohio. The pro bono lawyers were supported by law students from the University Of Akron School Of Law, also volunteering their time.
The pro bono lawyers were thanked for their service by Carmen V. Roberto, Ohio State Bar Association President and Ohio’s honorary chair for the National Pro Bono Celebration.
Following the clinic, The University Of Akron School Of Law hosted a faculty vs. students fundraiser which featured a cornhole tournament and a jousting pit. The fundraising event raised $1,400 for Community Legal Aid.
