Some Franklin County residents can receive free legal help in dealing with aggressive debt collectors under a new plan announced today.
The pro bono advice clinic, staffed by members of the Columbus Bar Association and the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, will offer consumers advice to help them navigate the legal system in addressing their debt, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray said today.
The clinic was created, he said, as a result of the increased consumer complaints.
“My office has seen a dramatic increase in debt-collection complaints over the past year,” Cordray said. “The increase is a clear reflection of today’s economic stress.”
“Ohioans are in need of help, especially when it comes to battling debt collection firms in court.”
The program, which has been tested since July, has already seen 72 consumers. A total of 27 cases resulted in favorable results for the consumers, such as dismissal, settlement or an agreed-upon judgment entry, said Elizabeth Watters, president of the bar association. Another 26 cases are still pending, she said.
The program is free and all Franklin County residents may apply. There are some income guidelines, although those limits will be addressed upon application to the program, Cordray said.
The clinic operates on the third Tuesday of every month. More information can be obtained by calling 614-241-2001.
