Peter Iskin, managing attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland’s Housing Practice Group, is the 2012 Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation Murphy Award winner.

The award, created by the Foundation in 1998, is named for Denis Murphy, a founding member of the Foundation who was an advocate of strong funding for civil legal aid serving Ohio’s low income population. Murphy died in 2005.

Iskin has been a lawyer for legal aid since 1973 and as a housing rights attorney focuses on expanding and enforcing the rights of tenants. He has acted as counsel on numerous important housing cases involving issues such as racial segregation, water quality, and access to public transportation. He has also authored a text on landlord-tenant law and serves in numerous community organizations focused on improving living conditions for low income people living in Cleveland.

The award was presented to Iskin during the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland’s Board of Directors meeting on Saturday. Colleen M. Cotter, Executive Director for the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, said of Iskin “Our organization, our community and the nationwide housing advocacy community are better for his leadership. All at Cleveland Legal Aid are honored to call him our friend and colleague.”
